Ho, ho, ho...choke...cough...gasp...Merry New Year!

Before you get suckered in by the upcoming media blitz that, gas drilling is good for you, consider the following:

Flaring of gas wells is a common practice in natural gas production, especially in the Barnett Shale. It is being done right now, this very minute, in Fort Worth neighborhoods and it is a detriment to our air quality and subsequently a serious health risk to all residents.

The attached photo was taken 12/29/07 at a well site near I-30 and Beach St., less than a mile from my home and about 3 minutes from downtown Fort Worth. Residential housing is about 1/4 mile away. (Take Beach St. north from I-30 and look to the west.)

I have observed the flaring for several days at this location. The flare was at ground level (no extension pipe). The noise was deafening. The smell in the air was choking.

Please click on the links below to read about the documented effects of gas well flaring on air quality. Gas drilling companies have stated that they want to drill 3,000. + wells inside Loop 820.

This information has not been provided by the gas drillers, the Star-Telegram, city officials, Downtown Fort Worth, Inc. or the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce, all of whom are benefiting financially from urban gas drilling:

One more thing...Remember that December 16, was the anniversary of the Palo Pinto gas well explosion that obliterated one square mile and blasted a crater the size of a football field in 2005.

---Do more than cross your fingers that such a catastrophe never happens in your neighborhood. Demand an environmental impact study from Mayor Moncrief and his Gas Drilling Task Force. Refuse to do business with the Barnett Shale mafia. Better yet:

Just Say NO To Urban Gas Drilling!
