Sand and Water. Lies and Damn Lies.

we can't drink natural gas-proof.jpg

Yesterday, I saw a giant Chesapeake Energy ad on the side of a Fort Worth city bus that read:

"Thanks Barnett Shale for Clean Air."

It seems the bar has been lowered on what defines "truth in advertising". The days of ads like, "Winston tastes good like a cigarette should", are quaint by comparison. Also, people are either more stupid, more apathetic or just don't give a damn.

We live in meaner, harder times. The Energy Wars are heating up and they are taking place in our backyards, our national parks, coastlines and city halls. The Water Wars are right around the corner. But will the water be drinkable? Depends on who you ask.

Thanks to the watchdogging of concerned citizens and activist groups, researchers like Dr. Theo Colborn, journalists at the River Reporter and actions by the State of Pennsylvania, at least one question has been answered. We now know for certain that "fracing fluid" used in natural gas drilling is much more than sand and water.

See the list below.

How many times have we heard or read that fracing fluid is nothing more than sand and water? That we would have to take their word for it because the recipe is proprietary. On rare occasions when gas drilling proponents fess up to the use of chemicals, they refer to them as benign or used in minute quantities.

Whatever the ratio of water/sand to chemicals, with tens of thousands of gas wells being drilled the amount of toxic chemicals entering water sources and the atmosphere is great and getting greater. The risk to people, pets and wildlife is growing exponentially. No amount of money can replace what is being lost.

Elected officials and drilling companies who continue to support irresponsible drilling are either criminals or criminally insane. To continue issuing drilling permits with knowledge of the impacts is the definition of immoral.
