According to Jim Schermbeck, of Downwinders at Risk, the appointment of Dr, Al Armendariz to EPA Region 6 Administrator is nothing short of miraculous. Huge.
This is Texas, ya know, where concern for the environment is akin to treason. In the very recent past, this appointment would have likely gone to a dirty industry rep. Not this time. (EPA Region 6 also includes Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and 66 Tribes.)
Dr. Al is a no-nonsense kind of guy who cares about people and the environment. He has the background and credentials to tackle the challenges of balancing energy production and a healthy ecosystem. He thinks industry can do a better job at controlling their pollution. He has their attention and we have his ear.
In other words: We won. Let's celebrate.
