Who is Wilma Subra?
Don't call Wilma Subra a modern-day Erin Brockovich. It's more like the opposite. Nothing against Erin B., but Wilma was crusading for the environment when Erin was still in law school.
She still is.
She is also very popular lately as oil and gas production has spread across the USA. Using her knowledge and expertise of the toxic chemicals involved in O&G production she is helping communities across the USA fight back against a powerful and irresponsible industry.
Wilma's cred-
- Board member of EARTHWORKS and the Texas Oil & Gas Accountability Project.
- Degrees in Microbiology, Chemistry and Computer Sciences from University of Southwestern Louisiana (Take that!, Ed Ireland)
- Awarded a MacArthur Genius Grant in 1999
- Former Vice-chair of the EPA Natl. Advisory Council for Environmental Policy & Technology (NACEPT)
- President of Subra Company, New Iberia, Louisiana
- Has been to the Barnett Shale several times, most notably in DISH, Texas
- Subject of recent CNN profile, Environmental Warrior Takes on Industry (5/25/2010)
... but, Wilma's down-to-Earth, no-nonsense style of communicating is her best asset.
